Born on 29 May, 1985, Shwayze has achieved enormous success in the music industry, making quite a name for himself.
Shwayze, Aaron Smith at the time, came from a poor background. He lived in a trailer park during adolescence and juggled several jobs. His introduction in to the music industry was unusual to say the least. He was discovered during a Whitestarr performance in a nightclub, when he jumped on to the stage and started freestyle rapping. The unexpected move landed him a deal with Suretone records, as Whitestarr frontman Cisco Adler was so impressed with him. Adler and Smith soon formed the duo Shwayze, meaning ‘not white’ (Smith identified himself in an interview as the only non-white kid in Malibu).
After recording several tracks together, the duo was signed to the label Geffen. Adler helped with the song writing, production and back-up vocals for Smith. The self-titled album, Shwayze, was released as the result of the collaboration and the first single off the album, ‘Buzzin’ became an instant hit. It was released on 19 August 2008 and was the start of Shwayze’s rise to success. His second single, ‘Corona and Lime’ peaked even higher on the Billboard Charts, topping the success of the first single.
Some of Shwayze’s musical influences include A Tribe Called Quest, Crazy Town and Atmosphere. Smith himself admitted that he grew up wishing to be like Snoop Dog. Shwayze’s musical style is unusual in that, despite sounding relatively mellow and pleasant, his lyrics revolve around the stereotypical rap content of women, drugs and heavy partying. Since his start, stint as a duo and decision to keep the name Shwayze as referring solely to himself rather than to both himself and Adler, Shwayze has released an impressive handful of studio albums and has come to be known as the quintessential Southern Californian rapper.
Originally Chiddy Bang consisted of another member; Noah Beresin also knows as Xaphoon Jones but he departed in 2013 so that he could focus his attention on producing.
Chiddy Bang began gaining attention after they received mass publicity on social media websites such as MySpace when their songs were featured on the popular music blog Pretty Much Amazing. This gained them a growing fan base of college kids and even led to them having a packed out show in Swarthmore College in April 2009.
In 2009 Chiddy Bang released their first ever mixtape titled "The Swelly Express" this hip hop music was well received by their fan base and contained 18 songs including skits. The song "Opposite Of Adults" contains a sample from "Kids" a song by MGMT. This song was incredibly successful and even managed to land itself a place on the charts; entering the top 10 on the US Billboard Heatseekers Songs and the top 20 within the UK official Singles chart.
In 2011 after the success of their song "Opposite of Adults" Parlophone/EMI gathered an interest in the duo and this resulted in them signing them with plans to release a full length album.
Chiddy Bang have worked alongside many artists including Tinie Tempah; in which they opened for the artist on his "Disc-overy tour".
After releasing their debut album "Breakfast" Chidera has announced that he would be working on the mixtape for Chiddy Bang titled "Baggage Claim".
Chidera currently holds the Guinness World Record for the Longest Freestyle Rap and the Longest Marathon Rapping record as he has rapped for 9 hours 15 minutes and 15 seconds.
Aaron Smith is the real name of the artist known as Shwayze, a cutting edge American rapper who released his debut album in 2008. My favorite song by him is “Corona and Lime” which I purchased right when it came out.
This song shows that this guy is not your typical rapper. He puts together rhymes like no one else can. He is almost grunge in his style and harmonizes with his band in a way like no other.
His songs are catching and once you hear a song it will play in your head for hours. He dresses with a casual sporty style and you will usually see his hat on crooked.
He is a rapper that really knows how to rock the house and he is very good at getting the audience pumped up. In the live show that I saw the audience was packed in like sardines. He spent some time talking to the audience and touching hands with those in the front row. Then he broke into a rendition of “Corona and Lime”. Since this is his most well-known song the audience broke into cheers and started singing along with him.
This was one of the best shows I have seen in years!
Philadelphia rapper Chidera Anamege, now known by his stage name Chiddy Bang is a pretty recognisable name on both sides of the Atlantic despite only breaking out in 2010. His continued sampling of alternative artists such as MGMT, Ellie Goulding and Passion Pit has seen his reputation grow even further.
His first album was considered a success in his homeland and he opens the show confidently with the title track 'Breakfast'. He has no issue performing solo following the departure of Noah Beresin and seems to thrive on the attention the crowd gives him as they cheer and scream as he steps towards the front row. The set is not particularly long yet it fits the purpose and features the cult favourites along with hits such as 'Ray Charles' 'Truth' and his breakout 'Opposite of Adults'. The rapper stands in a great position on the eve of a new release with a great debut and a strong fanbase supporting him all the way through.
In 2009, Asher Roth made going to college a popular thing, but not for the usual reasons. Literally the whole song is about partying in a college setting, and how is that not appealing to tons of people. “I Love College” became the penultimate party anthem in all college campuses and put Asher Roth on the map. When I saw him at SXSW in 2012, he did his set with DJ Wreckinize and I think it was a total of a twenty minute set. He had just signed with a new label, Def Jam, and was gearing up a lot of new songs. Because of his success of “I Love College” he had attracted a huge crowd; but I, like most other people in the crowd, really only knew maybe a song or two from his entire set. That didn’t matter though because he played up the crowd as soon as he hit the stage, getting them to wave their hands in the air each time he hit a chorus, and every so often between his songs he would address the crowd to keep up a great energy, and even call out certain people like “the girl in the blue dress,” and then waving to them. He also had a ton of energy, which doesn’t exactly come through in his hung-over sounding, love of partying anthem. For a Def Jam showcase, Asher Roth did the best possible show and really illustrated how good of a move to a different label will do him and his fans.
